The building was originally built in 1928 as an apartment building by Cunard Steamship Line magnate Sir Samuel Cunard. In the 1930s and 1940s, it became known as the home of many prominent African-American artists and intellectuals, including Duke Ellington, Paul Robeson, and W.E.B. Du Bois.
